Mawlid in Wad Medani

Mawlid in Wad Medani

Wad Medani Gouba

Mawlid is a week of celebrations.
Every evening for a week groups of family and friends meet in an open space where its turned into one huge festival, special sweets are made and childrens toys are sold.

Everyone is invited, a mix of young and old, spiritual and socail lights, locals and travellers.

Each area provides its own style of singing, guests are given free juice, water, tea and food at the end of the perfromances. It is shared and eaten in a communal way.

Young street kids love it they get to fill their bellies and join in with the chants.

The richer members of the community donate the food, and it is shared out amongst everyone. Doctors sitting next to street sellers sharing their meals with each other.

Each group have their own style.
